CBD, a natural remedy for sleeping well.

How does CBD affect sleep disorders?

Little sleep is harmful to health. A recent study has shown that sleep deprivation increases amyloid beta in the hippocampus and thalamus, and this is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s

In Italy 4 million people have chronic insomnia and about 12 million do not have a good quality of sleep. More than 40% of the world’s population suffers from sleep disorders!

Cannabidiol or CBD regulates the endocannabinoid system, that receptor network of the human organism responsible for maintaining homeostasis, that is, balance, within the body. Recent research has shown that the endogenous endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating circadian sleep-wake rhythm, including maintaining and promoting sleep.

CBD, thanks to its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action, is useful in combating insomnia. The specific mechanisms for which CBD has a beneficial effect on sleep are not yet fully clear, but the role of the endocannabinoid system in regulating circadian rhythm demonstrates a theoretical connection between cannabidiol and good sleep.

CBD-based Enecta products are safe, aren’t psychoactive and have very little side effects. The dosage of CBD to be taken is subjective as the metabolism of CBD being implicated in many physiological processes as modulator of other systems varies from person to person. It is advisable to consult a doctor both to investigate the causes of the disorder, and in cases where you want to use CBD for therapeutic purposes for specific diseases.

What does science say?

  • A 2017 scientific review states that according to several research, CBD has therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia. Instead, THC, another molecule contained in the cannabis plant, can reduce the latency of sleep, but can compromise the quality of sleep in the long term.

  • An interesting study by the Universities of Berkeley and Palo Alto published in Pubmed analysed the cannabis strains preferred by a group of patients who suffered from chronic insomnia and another group who had nightmares. The former preferred products with a high CBD content and a lower average THC content, while the latter preferred a sativa variety. A second study suggests that nabilone, synthetic THC, can reduce nightmares associated with post traumatic stress disorder and improve sleep in patients with chronic pain.

  • CBD is effective for REM sleep disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness. A study conducted at the University of Taipei shows how CBD can directly influence the night cycle, avoiding the suppression of REM sleep in patients with PTSD. Another study of adolescents with the same condition also shows an improvement in sleep quality when taking sublingual CBD.

  • The positive effects of CBD on sleep and nightmares are also noted in other studies, including the interesting case of reduction of nightmares and night movements in the REM phase of sleep in people with Parkinson’s disease.

  • A very interesting phenomenon has been demonstrated: CBD also has a beneficial role in induction upon awakening, for example after surgical operations, induced coma or lucid dream and trance states.

  • New studies on cannabis and obstructive sleep apnea suggest that synthetic cannabinoids such as nabilone and dronabinol may have short-term benefits for sleep apnea due to their interaction with serotonin receptors.

  • Another systematic review explains that despite the multiple benefits reported by patients taking CBD, there is often a sleep disorder caused by a period of abstinence by regular users. In addition, several studies show that treatments for insomnia caused by the discontinuation of cannabis treatments are needed.

Still have doubts?
Here are the answers to our customers most frequently asked questions

How much CBD should I take for insomnia?

Everyone can respond differently to taking different amounts of CBD in relation to different parameters like:

  • Body weight
  • Age
  • Reason for taking CBD
  • Existence of more health problems
  • Taking other medication at the same time

To date most scientific studies have been conducted using a variable dose between 50 mg per day and 80 milligrams per day. We always recommend that you seek medical advice.

Are there side effects?

Hemp is generally considered safe for human beings and animals. In fact, to date no scientific studies have reported negative effects related to taking CBD. However, in some cases side effects were detected, however, determined by the simultaneous intake with drugs. For this reason, especially if you're taking any type of medication, we advise you to seek advice from your doctor.

Can you get addicted to CBD?

To date no literature has demonstrated abuse or physical dependence problems, either with animals or humans, related to taking CBD.

Does CBD have psychoactive effects?

Unlike THC, CBD does not have psychoactive activities. Numerous studies have highlighted how it can counteract or reduce the negative effects of THC. Research suggests that more than defining cannabidiol as a non-psychoactive substance, it should be defined as non-inebriating, because despite having significant effects on the brain, would seem to be devoid of those characteristics that could transform it into a substance that can cause abuse or addiction.
