Quitting smoking is hard, but it’s not impossible. This year is the ‘Year of Cessation’ according to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention. This is partially because, despite a decline in smoking over the last ten years, it still accounts for one in five deaths in the USA.
Vaping is becoming increasingly popular with both ex-smokers and current smokers. People all over the world are replacing cigarettes with e-cigarettes and cannabis, both of which are considered to be safer and have fewer side effects compared to tobacco.
Why is it so Hard to Quit Smoking?
Quitting smoking comes with plenty of temptations.
These include stress, social pressure, oral fixation, and addictive urges. Sometimes all it takes is to smell cigarette smoke or see them for sale behind a cashier in the store for cravings to kick in. With all these factors, it’s no surprise that some people find it difficult to quit.
CBD and Nicotine Addiction
One of the biggest concerns with e-cigarettes as a cigarette alternative is nicotine addiction. While the majority of e-cigarettes contain nicotine, CBD products do not. To vape or consume CBD doesn’t require any nicotine at all. Another benefit of vaping CBD is that it doesn’t have the psychoactive properties associated with THC.
Additionally, CBD has very few side effects and fails to contain the 70+ carcinogenic chemicals that can be found in tobacco cigarettes.
What Does the Research Tell Us?
A few years back, The Beckley Foundation conducted a double-blind study as a research program. A group comprised of 24 smokers were randomized. Each was receiving an inhaler with either a placebo or CBD inside.
They were told to use their inhaler whenever they felt the urge to smoke. The study went on for a week, and the participants that were given CBD smoked 40% fewer cigarettes. Those that used the placebo-filled inhaler showed no changes in the amount that they smoked.
Why could CBD affect the urge to smoke?
CBD works with the bodies endocannabinoid system. As CBD stimulates our CB1 receptors, it helps to breakdown anandamide in our bodies. This action could be related to a reduction in the stimulating and boosting properties associated with nicotine.
CBD may also reduce attention to the contextual cues that could be involved with the maintenance of consuming nicotine. Anandamide plays a role in pain, appetite, and depression, based on this theory, it may be related to nicotine addiction.
In another study, participants were given either a placebo or an 800mg oral dose of CBD of the course of 48 hours on abstinence. The study showed that over this period, those that consumed CBD were less enticed by the ‘pleasantness’ associated with some pictorial tobacco cues that they were shown.
A further study found that a male patient that received CBD treatments successfully reversed his marijuana addiction, which means that CBD could be used to treat both tobacco and marijuana addicts.
Can You Use CBD to Quit Smoking Tobacco Today?
Before starting any treatment to quit smoking, contact your physician to discuss what is right for you as an individual. There needs to be more research undertaken to conclude for definite that High quality CBD is an effective treatment for all smokers.
That being said, there is no harm in trying, and consuming or vaping CBD products in any way should be encouraged for those that wish to improve their health.
