CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of the most important cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant. Here we will analyse the main therapeutic areas in which it is particularly effective.

CBD and chronic pain

A study conducted by Ben Gurion University highlights how cannabis can significantly reduce chronic pain in patients over 65 without dangerous side effects.

Victor Novack, a professor of medicine at the Ben Gurion University and head of the Cannabis Clinical Research Institute at Soroka University Medical Centre, has monitored patients aged 65 and over for about six months, seeing how cannabis helps to significantly alleviate pain resulting in improvement of the quality of life.

In the above study, the researchers found that after six months of treatment with therapeutic cannabis, more than 18% of patients stopped taking medicines like analgesics, opioids or drastically reduced their dosage.

CBD and cancer

When we talk about the efficacy of CBD and diseases like cancer it is important to underline how the results obtained so far by science are encouraging but not definitive - there is still a long way to go.

However, in some preclinical studies both THC and CBD have been shown to have antitumor characteristics, particularly when the disease occurs in the brain, breast, pancreas, liver and prostate.

Cannabinoids activate the CB1 and CB2 receptors present in the diseased cells and from there begins a complex intracellular process that would lead to cell death.

CBD and Multiple Sclerosis

Cannabidiol used to treat Multiple Sclerosis has proven to be effective, helping to reduce muscle spasms, pain reduction, sleep regularisation and the ability to reduce incontinence problems.

Multiple sclerosis is a degeneration of the nervous system that can progressively lead to loss of motor skills, weakening of the muscular system, chronic pain, spasticity, sleep disturbance, and problems with the urinary system.

In Italy, in the report updated to 2017, the AISM, (Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association) has requested uniformity on the national territory on the prescription, provision and dispensation of cannabinoids for therapeutic use both in hospitals and in care homes.

CBD and Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammation of the skin, non-contagious and non-infectious.

Psoriasis usually presents an area of erythema characterised by redness with white scales caused by abnormal thickening of the stratum corneum.

The areas of the body generally most affected are elbows, knees, hands, coccyx, scalp, and feet.

What are the causes?

The causes can be linked to genetic factors or environmental factors of an emotional, or physical nature, caused in some cases by drugs.

A lifestyle characterised by smoking, alcohol, obesity, stress and poor nutrition certainly favours psoriasis. People with a high BMI have a greater risk of developing it.

CBD and intestinal chronic disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract.

What are the symptoms?

The main symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, fatigue, lack of concentration and eye inflammation.

How does Cannabis work in Crohn's disease?

The entire gastrointestinal tract contains the CB1 and CB2 receptors, whose concentration may vary depending on the pathology affecting the intestine.

The study we cited showed that cannabinoids can act through the CB2 receptor, with the aim of reducing inflammation, which supports the scientific team's hypothesis regarding the possibility that cannabis could counteract inflammatory diseases of the intestine, such as Crohn's disease.
