In the past days we talked about CBG, trying to understand more about Cannabigerol, a molecule showing itself to have an interesting therapeutic potential.   

When we talk about Cannabis, we concentrate our attention mostly on THC and CBD, however we shouldn’t forget that in the plant there are over a hundred molecules, each with its specific characteristics.  

What is CBG?

Cannabigerol, also known as CBG, is a phytocannabinoid, which, differently from THC, isn’t psychoactive, just like CBD.

CBG was discovered for the first time in 1964 by the scientist Y. Gaoni, and consists of cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), one of the first cannabinoids forming itself in the Cannabis plant.

Gaoni talks about a terpenophenolic compound, as others present in Cannabis and can be divided in three different molecules, which in turn present different chemical properties, having applications in the therapeutic and pharmaceutical.

In fact during the maturation phase of the Cannabis plant, some specific enzymes transform CBGA in a variety of cannabinoid acid, like THCA, CBDA and CBCA.

CBG is considered an antagonist of the CB1 receptor of the Endocannabinoid System. What does this mean? It means that it can inhibit the effects of the CB1 agonists, especially of THC and this interferes with the effects of other cannabinoids.  
Which are the differences between CBG and CBD?

CBD and CBG are two cannabinoids present in the Cannabis plant which are completely different one from the other; they have very distinct chemical structures and concentrations.

Differently from CBD, CBG is a cannabinoid performing its function as a basis for many other compounds produced by the plants during growth. 

CBG and CBD are non-psychoactive compounds, CBG increases the production of anandamide, the main endogenous cannabinoid present in our body.

Anandamide helps to regulate sleep, appetite and memory, acting directly on the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CBD on the other hand, reduces the access of anandamide to fatty acids, which act as transport molecules. If you would like to know more about it Click Here.

CBD does not interact directly with the CB1 and CB2 receptors which are mainly present in our brain and central nervous system.

CBG on the other hand, act on the receptors as a partial agonist. However, the intensity of these effects is not at all comparable to that of THC.
