Cannabigerol, known as CBG, is a phytocannabinoid, which unlike THC, and exactly like CBD is not psychotropic. CBG was identified for the first time in 1964 by Yehiel Gaoni and is composed of cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), one of the first cannabinoids formed in the cannabis plant.  

CBG is considered an antagonist of the CB1 receptor of the endocannabinoid system.

A study  carried out by researchers of the department of Pharmacy of the University of Naples, Federico II, in collaboration with medical professionals of the Diagnostic department of the Pellegrini Hospital in Naples and researchers of the CNR in Pozzuoli, has demonstrated the action of CBG in a case of intestinal inflammation and arrived to the conclusion that “cannabigerol is a new therapeutic opportunity for those suffering from this disorder”.

The Therapeutic Potential of CBG

In 2015, researchers of the Department of Biochemistry and molecular Biology of the Complutense University of Madrid, have demonstrated the neuroprotectant properties of CBG.

The researchers used two different in vivo models of the Huntington’s Disease in mice, which is characterized by a progressive collapse of the nervous cells in the brain.

The study discovered that CBG was highly active as a neuroprotectant, improving motor deficiencies and protecting the neurons at the same time.
 

If we take too much CBG, which are the possible side effects?

Scientific research on CBG isn’t substantial at the moment, as it could be on CBD for example, however, when we talk about the side effects, we should part from the premise that each substance, also water, taken in excessive dosages can create side effects.

CBG  taken in the right quantities does not produce side effects, nor have we got direct evidence of adverse effects caused by Cannabigerol.

Taking the case of ‘CBD’ we could state that a possible “side” effect could be related to an excessive sense of dryness, which is due to the cannabinoid receptors present in the submandibular glands, which are responsible for the production of saliva.
